CANCELLED Workshop #6 – Understanding Prescribed Fire Implications and Developing Strategies for the New US Federal Ozone Standard

Instructors: Doug Fox , Cindy Huber, Allen Riebau; Nine Points South Technical Pty. Ltd., Joint Fire Science Program Smoke Science Plan Advisors; Thomas Moore; Western States Air Resource Council; Pete Lahm; USDA Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management and Mark Fitch; USDOI National Park Service

This workshop will develop (1) understanding of what the new federal ozone standard is, (2) how it will be implemented, (3) how it may impact the practice of prescribed fire, and (4) what strategies may be necessary for prescribed fire managers to adopt to comply with the new standard. A section of the workshop will be devoted to understanding how fire emissions contribute to ambient ozone concentrations, and what prescribed fire managers might do to mitigate and/or assess fire ozone contributions. A large part of the workshop will be to demonstrate a newly developed national ozone and fire assessment tool (DEASCO3, https://deasco3.wraptools.org); this will involve a hands on” experience with assessing prescribed fire impacts to ozone concentrations in several regions of the USA.

 Objectives:

  1. Develop understanding of what the new standard is and why it was adopted
  2. Develop awareness of how the new standard may affect the practice of prescribed fire
  3. Showcase a newly developed tool for assessing prescribed fire contributions to ambient ozone concentrations and the maintenance of the new standard
  4. Help prescribed fire managers to begin developing positive response strategies for working under the new federal standard.
